Part 1

Sizing Up SQL Server 2000 -

As a SQL Server 2000 consultant, you have been hired to help a client in choosing a database vendor. The project will be an Internet-based initiative. Address the following requirements of the client with the features of SQL Server 2000 that meet each need.

1. The client has a Web consulting company contracted to build an Internet site.

They plan on building the site using XML to pass data to Web pages for display.

2. The client will require high availability of their vital Web data. They want to ensure that their Web site is always available for use, even in the event of a hardware failure.

3. The client expects the user base for their Web application to start out modestly and continue to grow over the months and years ahead. They want to make sure they choose a database system that can scale with the needs of their growing business.

4. The client is running a customer management system on an existing SQL Server in house, and they want to be able to integrate that system with the new Web system.

Ideally, data in both systems could be updated at the same time, ensuring that the two are always in sync. Identify the features of SQL Server 2000 that will help the client achieve this goal.

Part 2

Anti-malware Software and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 -

Buddy’s Machine Shop has 30 staff, each with e-mail accounts. They are currently using

POP3 mail accounts with their ISP but have been having problems. Some days, they are going over their limit on the number of messages that can be transferred. In addition, the ISP does not allow for more than 30 e-mail accounts, which will be a problem if a new staff person is added.

Buddy is concerned that if they get their own mail server, they will be vulnerable to spam and viruses. Spam filtering and antivirus scanning is currently provided by the ISP. What features of Exchange Server 2003 should put Buddy’s mind at ease?

Integrating Database and Web Services -

You are part of a team of SQL Server consultants that is meeting a potential client.  That client needs to select a database system to support a growing Web site and has some concerns that you will address in you meeting.  First of all, in an effort to penetrate other global markets, they want to support multiple languages for their Web site, but they are worried about the costs associated with such an initiative (the possibility of additional hardware to support languages other than English).  Also, with the incredible growth in user activity the company has seen over the last few months, they want to implement a database that can offer scalability (their concerns focus on both hardware and database size limitations).  Finally, since they host a commercial-grade Web site, they want to ensure that the system is always up and running, even if a hardware error occurs. Your job is to come up with a proposal discussing the features of SQL Server 2000 that will help the client achieve their goals.  In addition to the information provided in this chapter (Chapter 2, Raftree), read case studies and testimonials on the SQL Server home pages (www.microsoft.com/sql) to provide real-world examples of how SQL Server 2000 is being used by other companies to solve similar problems.

2. Security is a major issue and has been emphasized by your managers.  Include in your document the various options you will use to secure the new FTP site so that only the appropriate users have access.  Be sure to include information about Active Directory User Isolation mode.

3. Include in your document how NTFS and IIS permissions can be used together to provide the most security.

Optimizing and Troubleshooting Databases -

A company has just deployed SQL Server 2000 to house data for its financial systems.  As more people within the organization use the system, the response time for operations degrades and users begin to complain that the performance is unacceptable.  Assuming that the hard drive configuration and the placement of indexes and tables across filegroups are optimized, poorly performing queries must be the culprit.  Based on the information in this chapter and the documentation contained in SQL Server Books Online, define a SQL Profiler trace that will help to identify poorly performing queries.  Discuss how to limit the amount of data captured through filters as well.
