PRESENTATION SCHEDULE

28 May: Guatemala, Chile, Romania, Bangladesh

2 June: Myanmar, Egypt, South Africa, Singapore, other?

Each group will come up to the front.  The presentation will start with someone in the group locating the country on the world map.  Each individual will then present what they consider to be their best image (place you want to visit, news event, national geographic photo, environmental issue) and talk about it briefly.   It will be best if all the images were in one powerpoint presentation, but that is not the only way.

Sources of Information:

I suggest that you look at CultureGrams, one of the research databases available at http://www.olympic.edu/CampusResources/Library/Research/findingarticles.htm#ref

Also I suggest the CIA factbook at https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/

You might find some of the reference books in the library useful, for instance encyclopedias including the Encyclopedia of world cultures (306.09), the Worldmark encyclopedia of cultures and daily life (305.8034), and of course the Encyclopedia Britannica (031)

You might want to check through books in the library, check in the on-line catalog: http://olympic.library.ctc.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First

There is also a Cultures of the world series that will be put on reserve.

Quoting your sources:

I require references for both photographs and text.  Use the MLA style, see http://www.olympic.edu/NR/rdonlyres/A6C1CCFF-BB44-4297-9E4E-F8322CB5AB74/0/MLAHandout.pdf

Note 1:

How does it relate to other things that you have learnt in this class or other classes or your textbook?

How does it relate to other things that you have read or seen in the news?

Have you experienced this type of event?

Do you have a particular interest in visiting the place/seeing this event? Why?

What does it make you think about?

Is it an area that you would want to study?

Does it worry you?  Why?

Do you think government or individual actions make sense?  Explain why.

Does this relate to your future? Are you interested in this sort of research?

Will it affect you, your family, friends, country?

If the article is about hazards, discuss what makes it a hazard (rare event, lack of preparation, lack of prediction, government policies, individual decisions etc)

If this is an old photograph, how have things changed since that time?

How does it relate to other things that you have learnt in this class or other classes or your textbook?

How does it relate to other things that you have read or seen in the news?

Have you experienced this type of event/landscape/activity?

What does it make you think about?
