GEOGRAPHY CAREERS
So what is geography?
Geography is a very diverse field that includes
both physical sciences and social sciences; it focuses on the where and why of the world we live in. There are
two main branches of geography: physical and human.
Physical
geography includes the study of weather and climate, landforms, sea-ice,
hydrology and vegetation among other things. Jobs in physical
geography are varied.
Human
geography includes the study of developing nations, globalization, economics,
human adaptation to change, and culture.
There are a wide range of jobs in human
geography
Geographers
study interactions between the human and physical environment, such as those
involving events such as hurricane Katrina. In the case of Katrina, geographers will
be involved in mapping areas needing disaster relief, determining the
environmental and human factors contributed to the death toll and planning
rebuilding efforts of both homes and waterways.
At Olympic we offer introductory courses in
physical and human geography. These
courses help students better understand world issues and can be continued at
nearby universities.
