Physical Geography jobs
Geographers work at a variety of government
agencies at the Federal, State, and local levels including the United States
Geological Survey (USGS), EPA, NASA, NOAA, the National Park Service, the State
Department of Water Resources, and the US Navy. Many geographers work for consulting
firms and environmental assessment companies. Physical geographers are involved
in work such as monitoring and tracking water and air pollutants, mapping
vegetation, monitoring climate change, predicting the behavior and direction of
a wildfire, specifying which areas are likely to be flooded in a "100 year
flood," or tracking disease outbreaks. If you are interested in this kind
of work, take courses such as physical geography as well as geology,
climatology, GIS, biology, physics and chemistry, mathematics and writing.
